Complete Process and Precautions for Transferring Data to a New Galaxy Phone (Galaxy → Galaxy S24 FE)
I finally bought the Galaxy S24 FE. Honestly, I was worried about transferring all the massive amount of data and photos from my old phone to the new Galaxy. But using Samsung Smart Switch, I transferred everything really easily and quickly. I’ll walk you through the entire process and share a few important notes.
Transferring Data to a New Phone
I purchased the Galaxy S24 FE model I had intended to buy in Korea through a much cheaper method overseas. Since I’d had my eye on it since its release, I feel satisfied with the value for money.
The purchase is complete, and now I just need to transfer my existing phone’s data, photos, videos, and files to the new Galaxy phone. There are so many YouTube videos on this part that it was easy to do. Since videos can go by so quickly, I’ve written this out step-by-step so you can follow along carefully. If you’re curious
why I chose the Galaxy S24 FE, please refer to the post below.
Important Notes Before Transferring to a New Galaxy Phone
When transferring data from your old phone to your new phone, you can use either a wireless connection (Wi-Fi) or a wired connection (USB C to C cable). If you have a large amount of data to transfer, it’s advisable to ensure your phone has sufficient battery charge to prevent the transfer from interrupting midway.
Also, please do not insert your old SIM card into the new phone before the data transfer is complete. While some data may transfer automatically to the new phone, others might not. Inserting the SIM card after data transfer is completed is perfectly fine.
If you previously used a Samsung Galaxy phone, the Samsung Smart Switch app is likely pre-installed. Simply verify it’s installed. This Galaxy data transfer process will be conducted using the Samsung Smart Switch app.
The entire process of transferring to a new Galaxy phone
1) Turn on the new Galaxy phone
Turn on the new Galaxy phone to transfer data. This is the very first screen I saw when I turned on the Galaxy S24 FE. Since I previously used a Galaxy (Android) phone, I selected “Existing Galaxy or Android device” first. You don’t need to
connect the cable yet. I had plugged it in right from the start, but upon checking again, I realized it wasn’t connected. You can see it’s not plugged in properly on the new phone, right?
When I purchased the Galaxy S24 FE, it came with a USB-C to C cable like the one shown above. I used this wired connection for data transfer instead of Wi-Fi. While Wi-Fi is fine, I was worried the connection might drop. If you want to transfer data using a USB-C cable like I did
, just connect the cable to both phones. For reference, if you see the screen above, just select Later. I was initially flustered when I first saw that screen, unsure what to choose.
2) Galaxy Smart Switch
Honestly, as long as you connect the cables correctly, Smart Switch will start. From here on out, all you need to do is just keep pressing the Next button.
For reference, the Samsung Smart Switch app copies the apps and data from your old phone to your new phone. Therefore, even after the copy is complete, the apps and data will still remain on your old phone.
Wi-Fi or cable are available as data transfer methods. I chose cable. I recommend cable for those who have a significant amount of data to transfer.
In the Smart Switch app, locate the data you want to transfer from your old phone. Once it’s ready, select the data to transfer. I selected everything.
The most important thing when transferring data to a new Galaxy phone is probably ensuring all KakaoTalk messages are transferred. Previously, you had to back up KakaoTalk data before transferring, but now that’s unnecessary.
Using the Smart Switch app, all your KakaoTalk messages, photos, videos, and more from your old phone will transfer instantly.
3) During data transmission
Now you just need to wait. In my case, transferring all 79.99GB of data took about 48 minutes total. During
the transfer, please be careful to ensure the two phones and the cable remain connected without disconnecting.
As the transfer began, the total estimated time changed. At approximately 7% progress, the remaining time increased to about 1 hour and 13 minutes.
For your reference, we recommend leaving your new phone untouched during the transfer and simply letting it be. This is to ensure the process completes perfectly in one go. After
this transfer finishes, a separate message will appear stating that imported data is being organized. Once this data organization completes, all data transfer is finished. You
can now move your existing SIM card to the new phone. The SIM eject pin, which helps remove the SIM from the phone, is included in the new phone’s case. That was the case for me.
Conclusion
Today, I’ve shared the entire process and important considerations for transferring data to a new Galaxy phone. Currently, I’ve copied most of my data over as-is and am using the new phone without any major inconvenience.
My previous phone had two SIM slots, allowing me to use both my local and Korean numbers seamlessly, but the Galaxy S24 FE only has one slot. This is likely because it supports eSIM.
