Create popcast with YouTube videos (NotebookLM)
With the pace of technology advancements these days, it seems like there’s a lot of information to keep up with, especially if you’re one of the many people who rely on YouTube videos to help you learn what you need to know. Well, we’ve found a time-saving gem. You can now create popcast with YouTube videos and create popcasts, which is what we’re going to show you how to do.
Google NotebookLM
Today’s topic, summarizing YouTube videos and listening to popcasts, is made possible by NotebookLM, a platform created by Google.
In fact, it’s not just YouTube videos that can be summarized, you can summarize many different source files at once and convert them to text or audio.
I’m a big fan of YouTube videos, so I’m going to use a YouTube video summary as an example to show you how I use this NotebookLM.
Create popcast with youtube videos
1) Find a YouTube video to summarize
I came across a short video by YouTuber Cosmozina that talks about how to study English in a fraction of the time. In fact, it can be applied to anything, not just studying English.
Cosmozina told me that she took this method from the One month day concept by a YouTuber named Rian Doris , so I was curious to see what this video was about.
If you have a YouTube video that you’re curious about, you can use it too, especially if it’s in English and longer. The point is that you can save time as using this method to create popcast with youtube videos
2) Enter the YouTube video URL
In NotebookLM,you can upload a variety of sources to summarize. Of course, you can also summarize multiple sources together to create an output.
Google docs, Google slides, website and YouTube URLs, audio files, and pre-made text files are all acceptable.
Since I’m summarizing a YouTube video, I selected YouTube and inserted the video URL.
3) AI Voice Overview
This is the screen after inserting a URL: on the left is the source you entered, in the middle is a short summary of it, and on the right is the result (popcast) created using AI speech.
Creating a popcast from a YouTube video summary is very easy – there’s a button in the middle that says AI Voice Overview and you just click it.
Depending on the length of the video, it may take a while for the popcast to be created.
One thing that surprised me after creation was the length of the popcast. The YouTube video was 27 minutes long, and the popcast was 45 minutes long. I summarized it to save time, but I was surprised that it was longer.
I decided to try another YouTube video, just in case.
4) Leverage personalization
There is a way. Go to the right of the AI voice overview in the middle of the screen, and you’ll see the Customize and Create buttons. From there, select Customize
This will give you a space to type in what you want the AI host to focus on, which is where I typed in that I wanted it to summarize the key points in about 10 minutes.
This second YouTube video is 47 minutes long and features Meta’s Zuckerberg talking about the future of AI with me. This is my customized 10-minute popcast.
The 47-minute video is condensed into a 10-minute popcast. You can copy the URL using the share icon or download it by pressing the three-dot button.
NotebookLM advantages
The best part about utilizing this NotebookLM is that it saves me time and allows me to quickly learn the information I need.
The latest IT and AI information is most likely to be in English, as news from abroad is faster than in Korea.
However, with this NotebookLM, you can quickly learn information without language restrictions.
What’s more, since this can be delivered in a popcast audio format, I can listen to it while driving, commuting, or exercising, so I feel like I’m killing two birds with one stone: making good use of my dialect time and learning information at the same time.
