Creating Video Captions in Canva (2025 Canva Update: Caption Feature)
Canva’s features have been significantly updated in 2025. Creating video captions in Canva is now incredibly easy. Previously, I used VREW and CapCut to add captions to videos, but this feature is now available in Canva too. I’ll show you exactly how to use it step by step.
Creating Video Subtitles in Canva (2025 Canva Update)
On April 10, 2025, Canva rolled out a major feature update. Among the new additions, you can now create video captions directly within Canva. So I tried it out right away.
Canva New Feature: Captions

For those who have videos they want to add captions to, Canva’s Captions feature is now available.
In my case, adding subtitles to YouTube videos after creating them seems like it would be quite useful, as it helps viewers understand the content.
The Captions feature is located within the Text menu on the left side of Canva. Of course, you must first import the video you want to add captions to. You can import your video file using the Upload option in the left menu.
I previously tried using a video created with AI. If you’re curious about how to make videos with AI, please refer to the post below.
1) Generating video captions

Select the video you want to add captions to, then click the caption generation button below to instantly generate subtitles for your video. You can drag the subtitles with your mouse to position them exactly where you want.
Of course, the number of subtitles generated depends on the video’s length. For reference, the video above is only 19 seconds long.
2) Video subtitle effects and animations
Of course, you might not like the generated subtitles. I certainly didn’t. But Canva has a feature that lets us create subtitles in the style we want.
It’s the Effects feature. Click on the subtitle, then select Effects from the top menu to access options for creating your desired subtitle style.
I designed the subtitles with a black border and eye-catching yellow text.

You’ll see the Effects and Animation menus above the video. While the Effects menu lets you change the subtitle style, Animation adds movement to the subtitles.
The newly added features to the caption function are Reveal, Highlight, and Snake. Try clicking each one to see how they look, then choose the one you like best.
Of course, you can also check out more animations by looking at the recommended options below.
3) Video subtitles completed
Since the title is “Creating Video Subtitles in Canva,” let’s take a look at the finished work together.
I applied a snake-style animation. It creates an effect where an underline appears at the position where the voice is heard, allowing for emphasis.
Conclusion
Today, I learned about creating video captions in Canva. I saw that captions generated smoothly for videos around 5 minutes long, created by other YouTubers.
Honestly, when creating video subtitles in editing programs like VREW and CapCut, Korean recognition often wasn’t as accurate as expected, and I frequently encountered typos due to pronunciation issues.
However, when using Canva’s caption feature to create subtitles, it was hard to find any typos in the subtitles for a 5-minute video. It created subtitles
so accurately that it saved me time on subtitle editing, which I really liked.
